Begin building the community of writers in The Writer’s Journey by:

1) Introducing ourselves to one another on the class wiki.

2) Sharing answers from the Peter Elbow Writing Questionnaire.

3) Crafting metaphoric connections to writing.

4) Responding to classmates in specific and meaningful ways.

How will your presence and the quality of your postings on the class wiki help establish the community of writers in TE 601, and help us begin our journey effectively?


Assessment Piece:

Completion and meaningful participation in response to the three Discussion prompts for this module.

Module 1A: Introductions

Go to the Module 1 Discussion area of this wiki, and compose your first post in response to the following prompt (when you click Reply to the prompt, change the subject line to YourLastName - Introductions):

Take a moment to introduce yourself to the class. Tell us your name, what grade you teach, where you teach, and what inspired you to take this class. What do you hope to gain as a result of embarking on The Writer’s Journey?


Interact with up to two of your new classmates, being sure to address them by name, by responding to something specific and content-rich from their initial post.

Once you have answered the Peter Elbow Questionnaire prompts in your Writer's Notebook, go to the Module 1 Discussion area of our wiki to complete the Module 1B Discussion prompt, which is:


Identify three of the answers you wrote that you would be comfortable sharing with your classmates. What you choose to share should be meaningful and provide insight into your experiences as a writer.



Resist the temptation to simply share #1-3 on the question list -- that has proven to make sharing rather boring and repetitive in the past. Be more intentional and forthcoming than that.



You are in a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment -- no one will be judging you or criticizing you.



Choose one classmate’s post to interact with and respond supportively and encouragingly to a specific quote/idea, being sure to address your classmate by name.

Read the document "What Writing Is" by Stephen King.


Once you have read the piece, which is an excerpt from King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, write your answer to the following prompt:


Write a well-crafted paragraph about what you found insightful and/or instructional about the piece, being sure to address specific passages/ideas. What did you learn about writing from King’s piece? What surprised you?


Then, write a well-crafted paragraph in which you write your own “What Writing Is” statement, using King’s piece as your mentor text. Which word would you compare writing to and why? Develop your concept by including examples that illustrate your claim.
